Year 10 Football vs Thomas Hardye: 4 - 1 victory

ESFA National Open Academies Cup: Round 3

On a blustery and shower hit November afternoon, St Luke's started their third round Open Academy Cup tie in scintillating fashion, keeping the ball for large amounts of the opening exchanges between the two teams. Maintaining possession and playing with the wind meant that the home side dominated the first half of the match who created numerous chances. However, being wasteful in front of goal meant that the deadlock was not broken until the 35th minute of the match, where Morgan Cullen struck his first of what would be a good day for him.

Half-time: St Luke's Science & Sports College 1, Thomas Hardye School 0

The second half signalled a fightback from Thomas Hardye, who started moving the ball quickly and and breaking into the St Luke's defensive third consistently. After weathering the storm, St Luke's began moving the ball with quick one touch inter-play and soon began to create a consistent flow of chances. This soon paid off with Morgan Cullen soon getting both his and St Luke's second and third goal to put the home side firmly in control. A well taken goal for Thomas Hardye gave them a well deserved consolation goal for their consistent endeavour and determination. Thomas Bray cooly finished to put St Luke's firmly into the fourth round with a well earned victory.

Final Score: St Luke's Science and Sports College 4, Thomas Hardye School 1

Squad: Ellis Burgess, Logan Spurgen, Sam Beer, Daniel Cullen, Lewis Nash, Evra Yao, Lewis Evans, Ethan Ampadu, Cole Fawkes, Jack Ronchetti, Morgan Cullen, Thomas Bray, Lewis Wilson and Thomas Preece.

Year 7 Football vs Ivybridge Community College: 3-0 victory

ESFA National Cup (Round 3)

On a brisk November evening a purposeful and determined St Luke's team took to a pristine Ivybridge 4G pitch in a competitive affair which was a fantastic advert for football in the South West.

The game started with St Luke's moving the ball quickly and creatively through the thirds and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Joe Wragg was the first to get himself on the score sheet with good anticipation to follow up at the back post. This lead was soon doubled with Josh Leaman-Bissett being sent clear and finishing cooly into the bottom corner. The fantastic start got better when Charlie Dack struck with an audacious lob over the keeper to leave the score at half time 3 - 0 to St Luke's.

A rallying Ivybridge, who moved the ball well and who were tenacious in the challenge pushed hard to get on the score sheet in the second half, with Levi Richards called into action several times to keep Ivybridge at bay. Yet through calm possession based play St Luke's held firm and although missing opportunities themselves, kept control of the game to round off a fantastic display against high quality opposition.

St Luke's now progress into the fourth round of the ESFA National Cup.

Year 9 Football vs Stoke Dameral: 4-3 victory

ESFA National Cup

The year 9s completed their hardest fought win to date against a well-balanced and physical Stoke Dameral side in wet and muddy conditions. The match started in the worst way imaginable for St Luke's with Stoke Dameral starting hugely positively and going two goals up within the first ten minutes. Stoke Dameral pressed high not giving St Luke's a second on the ball and it wasn't until half way through the second half that St Luke's found their rhythm and got a foot hold in the game. St Luke's eventually got one back before half time with Lewis Wilson taking on and beating three players in the middle of the pitch before finding Tom Preece who finished low in to the bottom corner.

The second half started frantically again but this time it was St Luke's who looked the stronger team with wingers Harvey Roddick and Ryan White seeing far more of the ball and Kiara-Jade Robins and Kieran Burpitt receiving far better service up front. It took a piece of individual brilliance to finally level the game however with Sam Stapleton beating two players on the edge of the box before finishing neatly in to the bottom corner. The game now looked very evenly balanced with both teams attacking and defending well. St Luke's nearly scored with a number of good efforts whilst at the other end it took some brave defending from Jason Howard, Harvey Andrews and Josh Baxter and some acrobatic saves from Ben Bingham to keep the score 2-2. Finally Stoke Dameral took one of their chances however after a goal line scrap the ball eventually ended up in Ben Bingham's goal.

St Luke's attitude and commitment to winning was never in doubt however and a inspired quick corner from Beckham Pyatt to Tom Preece was converted by the heel of Josh Baxter to once make the game equal with ten minutes left to play. St Luke's were the team in the ascendency for the last ten minutes with the fresh legs of Will Davies and Matt Sewter looking dangerous on the edge of the oppositions box.

The winner finally came with one minute remaining, Kieran Burpitt was put through 1 vs 1 with the keeper and the finish never looked in doubt as he calmly chipped over the helpless Stoke Dameral keeper to take the win for his team.

While no one could say this was the team's best technical performance the determination and desire the team showed throughout was beyond impressive and sees them progress into the 4th round of the National Cup.

We await the draw to see the opposition for the 4th round.

Squad: Ben Bingham, Sam Ord, Harvey Roddick, Kiara-Jade Robbins, Tom Preece, Harvey Andrews, Beckham Pyatt, Sam Stapleton, Ryan White, Lewis Wilson (c), Josh Baxter, Will Davies, Matt Sewter, Kieran Burpitt

Year 10 Boys Football vs Tiverton High School: 5 - 1 victory

Under 15 ESFA Open Academy Cup

This was a very good performance from the year 10 side in difficult conditions on a very boggy Tiverton pitch in fading light.

St Luke's started the brightest and took the lead through a fine Morgan Cullen finish, rifled past the goalkeeper via the underside of the crossbar.

However, Tiverton got themselves back into the game after a defensive lapse in the St Luke's rearguard, making the score 1-1 at half-time.

St Luke's stepped up through the gears in the second half and ran out comfortable winners with two headed from Jack Ronchetti, a superb dipping 25 yard strike from Lewis Wilson and another clinical finish for captain Morgan Cullen.

This sees St Luke's progress into round 2. Well done boys!

Squad: Ellis Burgess, Lewis Nash, Logan Spurgeon, Sam Beer, Dan Cullen, Lewis Wilson, Lewis Evans, Alex Roberts, Evra Yao, Morgan Cullen, Thomas Bray, Jack Ronchetti, Tom Preece.

Year 7 Boys Football vs Torquay Boys Grammar School: 2-2 (2-1 pens) victory

ESFA National Cup: Round 2

On a compact and pristine pitch, St Luke's started this second round National Cup tie brightly. Moving the ball around with pass quality and care, St Luke's soon started to create chances which found the Torquay goalkeeper in fine form and equal to everything St Luke's could throw in the early exchanges.

However, after some nice combination play down the right hand side, Joe Wragg finished off a slick counter attack to put the home side 1-0 up. Yet the valiant Torquay remained vigilant in their passing style of play and got their just rewards with two goals before the break to leave them 2-1 up at the interval.

A tight and intense second half was hotly contested by both teams. Drawing towards the latter stages of the game, St Luke's started piling on the pressure which again found the Torquay goalkeeper hard to beat. Yet pressure eventually told and Ben Chapman soared above the crowd in a congested penalty area to head home the equaliser, 2-2.

Fourteen minutes of extra-time still could not separate the two sides in what was an excellent game to advertise school football in the South West. This meant, penalties. With five courageous volunteers from each side chosen, St Luke's eventually ran out 2-1 winners. Congratulations to Torquay Boys Grammar school who represented both themselves and their school fantastically, as well as playing some fantastic football.

St Luke's now progress into round 3.

Year 9 Football vs Wellsway School, Bristol: 4 - 0 Victory

ESFA Year 9 Open Academy Cup

year 9 football team

Mr Hallam reports: This was one of the best St Luke's performances Mr Evans and I have had the pleasure of witnessing, with every single one of the squad making an outstanding contribution in ensuring this amazing result in this fierce competition, away from home. St Luke's went into this fixture significantly under strength, missing key Exeter City Academy players Kieran Burpitt, Tom Preece, Oliver Bray and Oakley Bennett, all through injury.

It was a long sluggish drive up to Bristol, but the team, to their credit, were quick to switch on after getting off the bus and engaged in a high intensity warm-up to mentally and physically prepare for the challenge ahead.

Wellsway nearly took the lead immediately with a long ball over the top from kick-off which was defended with a nervous last gasp challenge inside the St Luke's penalty area just as their striker was about to pull the trigger. However, St Luke's responded instantly when Ryan White turned his defender inside out before curling a beautiful finish past the Wellsway goalkeeper from 25 yards inside the first minute. This provided huge confidence and momentum and from this point onwards it was all St Luke's. Josh Baxter, Harvey Andrews, Ben Bingham and Kieran Knight were majestic in defence, nipping any Wellsway attacks in the bud and maintaining possession when playing out from the back, giving us a solid platform to play with confidence and flair. Captain Lewis Wilson was outstanding in central midfield, supported brilliantly by the tireless work-rate of Beckham Pyatt, both combative in defence and creative in possession and this led to plenty of attacking opportunities for St Luke's, who doubled the lead through a rifled Lewis Wilson drive from the edge of the area to make the half time score 2-0.

The message at half-time was clear, don't change a thing!

St Luke's played even better football in the second half, with further goals from Lewis Wilson and Sam Stapleton. St Luke's goalkeeper Jack Arthur was a commanding presence throughout and made an excellent 1-on-1 save to keep a well-deserved clean sheet.

The side now progress into the next round of this challenging competition.

Well done to the team, a truly magnificent performance and result!

Squad: Jack Arthur, Kieran Knight, Ben Bingham, Harvey Andrews, Josh Baxter, Sam Ord, Sam Stapleton, Lewis Wilson, Beckham Pyatt, Kiara-Jade Robins, Jason Howard, Ryan White, Harvey Roddick.

Year 10 Boys Football vs Torquay Academy: 5 - 2 victory

ESFA National Cup: Round One

On a crisp October evening St Luke's took on a spirited and physical Torquay Academy side in the first round of the National Cup. With composure on the ball and a competitive nature out of possession St Luke's took control of the fixture with goals from Thomas Bray and a bullet header from Morgan Cullen in quick succession.

Leading 2-1 at half-time St Luke's started the second half brightly with Evra Yao and Isaac Stribley constant threats down the flanks. A direct ball from Ellie Burgess put Morgan Cullen in for his second goal which was soon added to by Thomas Bray to leave St Luke's in a commanding 4-1 lead. A thunderous 20 yard strike from Lewis Nash rounded off a thorough display by the year tens leaving the score at 5-1. A late thoroughly deserved consolation goal for Torquay left the final score as St Luke's Science and Sports College 5, Torquay Academy 2. St Luke's now move into the second round.

Team: Ellis Burgess, Sam Beer, Logan Spurgeon, Daniel Cullen, Alex Roberts, Morgan Cullen (c), Lewis Nash, Thomas Bray, Callum Tooze, Evra Yao, Isaac Stribley, Kristian Katunsky.

Goal Scorers: M. Cullen (2), T Bray (2) & L Nash

Year 9 Boys Football vs Great Torrington: 2 - 1 Victory

ESFA National Cup, Round 1

The year nine football team produced a battling display in difficult conditions against a physical and competitive Great Torrington side.

St Luke's took the lead when Tom Preece finished following an error by the great Torrington keeper.

St Luke's then had numerous opportunities to increase their lead but squandered all of them. Great Torrington subsequently equalised with a good angled strike on the counter-attack, making the half-time score a rather frustrating 1-1.

The second half was combative and both sides had great chances to win the game, with St Luke's goalkeeper Ben Bingham producing a string of excellent saves to keep Great Torrington out at crucial moments in the match. Tom Preece added his second goal and what proved to be the winner when he finished off a good move down the right hand side with a low powerful shot into the bottom corner to make the score 2-1.

A good win, but plenty of improvements to make if the side have ambitions of progressing to the further stages of the competition.

Well done boys!

Squad: Ben Bingham, Sam Ord, Jason Howard, Harvey Andrews, Josh Baxter, Harvey Roddick, Lewis Wilson, Beckham Pyatt, Tom Preece, Sam Stapleton, Ryan Whie, Will Davies, Matthew Sewter

Year 7 Boys Football vs Uffculme: 3-2 (aet) Victory

ESFA National Cup: Round 1

The Year 7 football team overcame a difficult first hurdle in the National Cup, winning 3-2 during extra time away to Uffculme.

The Uffculme boys, despite being deprived of possession for sustained periods of time, battled resiliently and took their chances really well to stay in the tie. They also had their outstanding goalkeeper and wasteful St Luke's finishing to thank for the close score-line.

St Luke's took the lead with a fine Joe Wragg finish high into the roof of the net. Uffculme equalised with a great cross and volley against the run of play, however, St Luke's regained the lead just before half time, with Josh Leaman-Bissett tapping in after Joe Wragg's angled shot was parried into his path by the goalkeeper.

The second half saw much of the same, with St Luke's squandering numerous chances, along with some fine goalkeeping. Uffculme made the score 2-2 when they scored from a fine strike from the edge of the box after St Luke's had half cleared a corner.

St Luke's keeper Levi Richards then made a great one-on-one save, denying a certain goal to keep the score at 2-2.

Mr Pritchard rotated the St Luke's players regularly to watch players play in different positions and also to keep legs fresh.

The game went into extra time and Uffculme really went for it, but St Luke's defended confidently and finally finished one of their chances with Joe Wragg curling past the outstretched hand of the keeper and into the far corner.

The game finished 3-2 to St Luke's, who progress into the 2nd round of the national competition.

A solid team performance made difficult through wasteful finishing and some naive defending, but a good result! Well done boys!

St Luke's Squad:

Levi Richards, Dre Butt, Alfie Pond, Jack Meaton, Charlie Dack, Will Bailey, Joe Wragg, Josh Leaman-Bissett, Harry Wilkins, Ollie Blackmore, Chris Needs, Niall Burland, Brady Bolt.
